Oxford Castle & Prison Named One of the UK’s Best Storytelling Attractions

We’re delighted to share some exciting news from within our ancient walls… we have been officially recognised as one of the UK’s top storytelling attractions!

Oxford Castle & Prison Wins VisitEngland’s Best Told Story Accolade

VisitEngland has awarded Oxford Castle & Prison the prestigious Best Told Story accolade for 2025 – an honour given to only 10 attractions in the entire country. The award celebrates places that bring history to life through exceptional, engaging and memorable experiences, and we’re incredibly proud to be among them.

Celebrating Immersive Storytelling and Guided Tours

The recognition follows an in-depth VisitEngland assessment, which praised the immersive quality of our guided tours. Our knowledgeable costumed guides who lead guests through almost a millennium of dramatic history – from the castle’s Norman beginnings under William the Conqueror, to the imprisonment of Empress Matilda (said to have inspired House of the Dragon’s Princess Rhaenyra), and the chilling tales from our more recent life as a working prison.

The assessed tour was hosted by Tour Guide Anne Brenneman, who joined our Operations Duty Manager, Emily Denmark, to receive the award from Lady Victoria Borwick, VisitEngland Chair, on Wednesday 12th November.
