Enjoy a guided tour with a warming touch this winter at Oxford Castle and Prison. Throughout December our costumed guides will be leading the tours by lantern light. Feel closer to our fascinating history by exploring the castle reminiscent of the Victorian era.
Admire gorgeous views of Oxford from atop of St. Georges Tower, climb the 101 steps and make use of this fantastic photo spot. Listen to the great tales of Empress Matilda, the Queen of England that never was and her royal battle here at Oxford Castle.
Descend underground to the crypt of St. Georges chapel, with only the flicker of candles and your lantern, here you will feel the historic atmosphere. Discover the great stories tied to the crypt and the chapel that once lay above. With connections to Oxford University and The Legend of King Arthur, you’ll be surprised at what the stones beneath your feet have seen.
Wandering the prison corridors by lantern light only adds to its’ eerie past. Step inside the prison cells to learn about our most famous inmates and see if you have what it takes to be locked up in a medieval jail. Hear of the gruesome past some prisoners faced in Debtors Tower and then get free time to view our exhibition space. After the tour, you can walk up the mound, the remains of our motte and bailey castle.
Please note: Due to filming commitments on Friday 13th December, the Lantern Led Tours will not be as festive. We are closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
